Skyline Bucket Mute

NEW!  A collaboration with the jazz trumpet great Chad McCullough! When Chad approached me with the idea of collaborating on a bucket mute I was immediately interested.  He experienced some of the same issues I have noticed as well: dead notes, inconsistent articulation, blow issues.  We traded back and forth ideas for a long time before settling on this design....but we were still unhappy.  We tried all the regular remedies to get the sound we wanted, but none gave us the response we wanted....until one day I had a realization: Use a diffuser to help the blow AND control the sound. It took lots of tweaking and changing and designing and printing, but after many months of work I am ecstatic to share the SKYLINE BUCKET for trumpet with the world!  Trombone friends, don't worry, you're next! :) Morningstar Custom Mutes: Better by design!

NEW! The Griffin Trumpet Straight Mute: A collaboration with Adrian Griffin, principal trumpet of the Monterey Symphony in Mexico. When Adrian approached me, two things became clear very quickly: he’s a phenomenal trumpet player, and, like many others, he was frustrated with his mute options.

As we began talking, it quickly became apparent that Adrian had strong ideas about mutes ideas that, in some ways, challenged my own understanding of how they function. Rather than dismiss these perspectives, I thought it would be both fun and valuable to incorporate them into a design, drawing on what I’ve learned through extensive testing and recording.

I soon realized I would need to find new strategies in my approach in order to meet Adrian’s vision: Focus, flexibility, a complete range, buzz: he wanted it all, and proved to be a tough-but-fair partner throughout the entire process, which lasted well over a year.

The result is what we’re calling The Griffin: a revolutionary trumpet straight mute, one with all the notes and all the buzz. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with this mute and of my partnership with Adrian, and I can’t wait for you all to try it!
